Halloween @ Chinatown
1. Halloween is not a big deal in Australia, at least for anybody I knew back home. Here, there’s only one reason to celebrate Halloween — and that’s Nanja Events’ Halloween costume party at Club Chinatown last Saturday night.
Revellers at Club Chinatown’s annual Halloween bash.
2. If ever was a party where you know everyone will go to, this would be it. But it might not have been, thanks to Hiroshima Police’s inane and inconsistant raiding of dance venues. According to the “Public Morals Law“, dancing in establishments that serve alcohol at the same time is forbidden after 1am. A few local bars have been raided, and in every instance Japanese nationals have been let off and foreigners segregated and detained for hours afterwards. Footloose, anyone?
3. Anyway, costume preparations were in full swing saturday morning, when procrastination gave way to mild dismay. I had racked my brain for a reasonable costume idea, and none had worked out… I was desperate to avoid what colleagues, students and pretty much everyone else had, err, encouraged me to be, but alas. So I went as Harry Potter.
4. The night started at Kemby’s for the Halloween warm up, where we could pick up some discount entry tickets for the party. Food, warm up beer and a fistful of tickets later we headed off to Molly’s for more beers. We hit Chinatown at about 12.30am, and it was packed to the rafters with costumed partygoers.
5. Bumping into practically everyone I knew in this town, and meeting a bunch more that I didn’t, we drank and danced and admired the effort some went into their costume. I think I managed to get into a few photos myself, but the incriminating evidence has yet to find its way online.
6. After, about 4.30am, we headed off to Kemby’s AM for the after party party. The music was quieter, but every bit as lively. There were people dancing on stools, at least one flashing baton was molested, and plenty of people sleeping at the bar. I eventually decided that no bartender should be so lively at so early an hour, and caught a cab home at about 7.30am. If there is one thing that this city can do is provide a damn good night out, when the bacon keep their nose out of it. I’m looking forward to the next big ‘un; chalk up another reason why I don’t want to leave this place.
