January
1. Someone once told me what happens at the beginning of the year is a precursor to how it will end. Good January? Great December. Bad January? Uh-oh December. If that be the case, December ’07 is going to suck.
2. Well, that’s not totally fair. By and large January wasn’t so bad, if you discount losing my wallet (which had all my cards and 26,000 yen in it), getting my bike towed away by the cops, having to work on Australia Day (knowing full well all my friends back home were getting drunk) and coming down with a nasty fever laden flu (I’m currently suffering from said flu). And the various bouts of intestinal troubles, probably a left over from Indonesia. But, discount those and I had a pretty good January, filled with fun and frivolity. Really.
3. There were multiple trips down to Fukuoka, partying with the teachers down there and meeting bar girls. It was nice coming back from holidays and seeing all my friends here, and having a big dinner as well. There was the night were we went to a bar and one especially drunk Japanese man kept buying vodka tonics and feeding it to me — whole glasses at a time (yeah, I got a bit drunk that night) — and then finding ourselves overrunning a ramen place at six in the morning for a bit of dinner. The ramen was really good too.
4. But I don’t believe in that superstitious crap, I reckon this year is gonna be awesome. December included. I’m going to give this snowboarding caper a go in a couple of weeks, I fully expect to look like an idiot, sliding down the mountain on my arse. A few people from Kyushu (where Fukuoka is) are coming up at various weekends over February to hang out. An old mate from Hiroshima is coming back in February, and while he’s based in Tokyo he’s at least a whole lot closer than London.
5. I’m currently sorting and polishing photos from Indonesia, they’ll be up in a week or so.
