The Original Macintosh

1. …had a manual that looked like this:

2. How delightfully quaint! I wish my university life had been like that, bicycles, old stone buildings, bad sweaters and blonde hair. When MenTM could be MenTM even with a basket on his ManlyTM bicycle. How times have changed! That picture was from Peter Merholz who got himself a copy of the original manual and posted a few photos along with some commentary. Check it out here.

  1. Hey, that looks almost like the main quad at Sydney Uni. Which I guess means my uni life was like that. But I never cycled there.

  2. Dude, that is my day to day. I must be living the dream!

Bicycles: check; Stone buildings: check; Bad sweaters: well, not that bad.

There’s even a guy I work with who has a basket on his bike. On the back though. And it’s a timber basket, of course – reinforced with carbon fibre. He has an awesome leather saddle too. His bike is like one of those cars, you know, with the wood-grain panels on the side? I keep telling him to put more wood grain on it.

  3. Actually, I once had a powder blue bike with a rack on the back and a basket on the front. That was for about 3 weeks in February of this year — after which either the fashion or the bike police impounded it for bad taste, or perhaps I was parked where I wasn’t supposed to.

I wish I did something slightly less practical at uni, say, an Arts degree. And went to a real university. Why couldn’t I have gotten drunk between classes, stumbling between stone pillars?
