About Me

Thanks for visiting — I’m your host, John Kung.

I was born on May 14th, 1979, in Hong Kong, around about dawn, and so begins a lifelong distaste for waking early. Roused grumpily into the world, I decided early that I would not be walking with the usual crowd — unlike other newborns who come out screaming, I was content with quietly staring down the doctor, silently demanding he put me back where I was quite confortable, thanks very much. That didn’t last, he hung me upside down by the ankle and gave me a mightly thwock to clear my throat, and arguments have been made that I haven’t been the same since.

I lived in Hong Kong for my first seven years, and with the looming threat of Chinese Occupation my parents looked elsewhere for a new life. We immigrated to Australia in 1986, settling in the southern suburbs of Sydney, and promptly became citizens in 1988. Fast forward a few years, skipping past the life, love and other tragedies, I graduate from university in 2003 with a degree in Graphic Design and a passion for photography.

In early 2008 I got married to my wife, and we are currently organising a move to Australia, where I will pursue a career in Photography and Design. My portfolio is online at http://www.johnkung.com. I am available for hire, please contact me for details.

About this site

This site is my notice board, my diary, my portfolio, my soapbox, my playground, my study… a kind of virtual lego set from which I can build anything. It the place where I offer my thoughts, practice my writing, communicate with friends and family, and experiment with layouts and forms of expression. But above all it is a personal site, and though I make every effort to share this with everyone who comes here, I offer no warranties to its usefulness or even whether it works on your computer. I built this on a Mac, my default browser is Safari, I use SubEthaEdit to hand-code each template and Wordpress as my backend blog software. I know this renders correctly on Safari, Firefox (Mac & PC) and IE for Mac 5.2. There’s a minor cosmetic issue with IE 6 for PC (even though it’s a steaming pile of crap, I try to support it because I know sometimes you don’t have a choice, like with me at work) but it renders correctly. Aside from those browsers, you’re on your own.

Each post is tagged in a category, or multiple categories, and the categories can be found in the Archive page. The main menu on the left of each page has links to the RSS feed for this site, my photography site and a few other places, while right down the bottom of the page is, the search function and the fine print. If you have comments, or whatever, you can email me. I hope you enjoy my site.
